My Geordie mother and London born father brought up their three children in and around the Thames Valley area. I was born in 1947, and educated at local schools until at thirteen I was sent to the Brigidine Convent in Windsor, where dancing and acting were very much part of the curriculum – we put on shows at the Scala Theatre every year. Me, aged 9...
I knew then that acting was to be my life, but had to get through A Levels at Ashford Grammar School before going to Drama School to really feel at home. My training was at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

In 1981, I married the guitarist Max Brittain, giving birth to first, Emily in 1983, then in 1990, identical twins Alice and Olivia. We moved out of London in 1995, but the same year I was diagnosed with breast cancer. With enormous support from family and friends, I recovered, having had treatment at Hammersmith Hospital and the Bristol Cancer Help Centre. I now offer support to other patients by talking to them, writing articles, or giving interviews. Click HERE* for my interview on Panorama where I'm talking about positive thinking.

In 2008 I successfully completed an MA at Brunel University in Shakespeare Authorship Studies. This has led to a whole new career in giving talks on the Authorship Question; a subject I found fascinating in my research for The Merry Wife of Wilton. These talks focus on Mary Sidney, Countess of Pembroke and her circle of writers at Wilton House. This will be the subject of a book to be published in 2012. There is a wealth of material out there!
